What is tip opening?

Tip opening describes the distance between the reed tip and mouthpiece tip when the reed is positioned correctly. It is one feature of a mouthpiece, not a complete explanation of its sound.

Opening and facing work together

Facing shape and length, chamber and reed also affect the playing feel. A single number cannot reliably predict how a mouthpiece will suit you.

A playing test matters

Compare with your familiar instrument and appropriate reeds. Keep manufacturer specifications separate from your personal impressions. Look for confirmed measurements in the model description.
